“Eat your orange so you won’t catch a cold.” You probably heard that from your mommy several times when you were just a kid... or until today. We all know something about Vitamin C, it’s as if our brains were programmed with some data that says Vitamin C wards off a cold. To those who still doesn’t know, I’m very sorry to burst your tangy bubble but it’s been proven a myth long ago.
Picture
A picture of the tangy bubble that's about to be burst.
How Did it Start?
The cold-busting myth originated back in the 18th century: the time when there were no mobile phones, no internet and no vitamin manufacturers yet. The time in history when sailors had poor nutrition, lack of vitamin C to be exact. Scurvy was really a scare back then. Scurvy is a disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin C in the body. It is characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, and the opening of previously healed wounds.

In addition, Linus Pauling popularized a theory back in 1970. This theory is all about using large doses of Vitamin C to prevent the common cold. He even published a book about it! He used up to 18,000 mg to himself every single day. That’s too much, considering the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 75mg for women and 90mg for men. At that time, there were really no good studies about it so we forgive them.

Not the common cold.
So There’s No Chance of Preventing Cold with Vitamin C?
Again, sorry to disappoint you but Vitamin C has shown no effect in cold prevention in normal situations according to clinical studies but that doesn’t mean you won’t be eating any oranges or taking vitamin C supplements anymore. Researches show that getting a dose of 200mg or above may help reduce the duration of colds slightly. Some other factors should also be considered like individuality: some people get better or improve afer taking Vitamin C supplements (provided by a reliable vitamin manufacturer and supplement manufacturer, thats us!) while others don’t.

Bless you!

What is Choline?
Choline is a strongly basic compound occurring in living tissues and plays a very important  role in the synthesis and transport of lipids. Choline is a water-soluble nutrient and it is usually grouped within the B-complex vitamins (A group of water-soluble vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, pyridoxine, folic acid, inositol, and vitamin B12 and occurring chiefly in yeast, liver, eggs, and some vegetables).
Some of the Benefits of CholineLiver: Choline is likely disease caused by exclusive feeding by vein (parenteral nutrition). Giving choline intravenously (by IV) treats liver disease in people receiving parenteral nutrition who are choline deficient.

Membrane Structure: Choline is an essential nutrient in the production of phosphatidylcholine, one of the most important structural building blocks of a living cell. Its unique soap-like structure helps to keep the membrane fluid, yet mostly impermeable.

The "May" Benefits: These are some of the health benefits of Choline that needs further studies but there are some accounts wherein they claim Choline helped. That includes the following:
  • May help memory problems associated with aging
  • Prenatal use may lead to lifelong improvement of visuospatial memory in children born of the pregnancy
  • Supplementation during infancy and childhood may lead to improved lifelong memory
  • May reduce fatigue and increase vigor during strenuous exercise
  • May help reduce levels of plasma homocysteine

What is Selenium?
Selenium is an essential trace mineral important for cognitive function, a healthy immune system and fertility for both men and women. Selenium is found in a variety of foods, the richest sources being Brazil nuts, seafood and organ meats.
Picture
Brazil Nuts
Health Benefits of Selenium
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Helps in sperm production in males
  • Helps in maintaining healthy hair and nails
  • Aids in normal function of the thyroid
  • Protects cells from being damaged

Selenium is responsible for the body's production of prostaglandins which is a group of cyclic fatty acid compounds with varying hormone-like effects, notably the promotion of uterine contractions; which regulates inflammation and can reduce inflammations related to Rheumatoid arthritis.
Picture
In a 2014 study in Netherlands, Selenium has been linked to helping in lowering the risk of prostate cancer. Researchers tested the levels of selenium in the toenails of study participants, a marker that measures long-term selenium intake. The researchers found that the greater the level of selenium in the toenail, the lower the risk for prostate cancer in study participants. Of note, earlier studies investigating a link between selenium and prostate cancer had varying results. Selenium, together with vitamin E, as an antioxidant prevents the formation of free radicals which means reduced risk of skin cancer and can help in preventing sunburn.

Picture
Sources of Selenium
Selenium is a mineral that can be found in several food categories but before we go crazy over this tiny chunk of miracle, please note that we only need a small amount of Selenium. The recommended daily allowance for Selenium (RDA) is 55 micrograms per day for adults and for pregnant and lactating women, it's 60 to 70 micrograms a day.

Nuts/Seeds
As mentioned above, Brazil Nuts tops the list. Brazil nuts are large three-sided nuts with an edible kernel, several of which grow inside a large woody capsule. Brazil nuts grow on a South American forest tree, and most are harvested in the wild. 4-6 pieces of these nuts will give you 544 micrograms of Selenium but it depends on the soil the nuts are grown and the process of farming. Poor soil and bad farming process has been proved to reduce the amount of Selenium in Brazil Nuts. Sunflower seeds provide 55 micrograms per 100g.

Seafood
Fish, particularly Yellow Fin Tuna provides 108.2 micrograms of Selenium per 100g. Shellfish like crabs, prawns and lobsters contain Selenium too! The highest among the shellfish category is oyster. 100g of oysters pack 80 micrograms!

Organ Meats
Organ Meats like kidney and liver are high in Selenium. You can get 100 micrograms of Selenium from 100g of liver from lamb or chicken.

Other Sources
Other sources include: eggs (27µg/100g), mushrooms (19µg/cup), cereals/bread (7µg/100g) and other vegetables like broccoli have Selenium but in less amount.

What do soy sauce, cured meat and fish, Roquefort cheese, pickled cucumber, instant ramen/noodles, snacks like pretzels, fast food and even canned vegetables like sweet peppers all have in common? Yup, you got that right! They're all high in salt.

Medical professionals, health and wellness enthusiasts, custom vitamins companies, even supplement labeling companies and even companies in contract vitamin nutraceuticals are aware of this and you should be too!

The Role of Salt in the Body
Sodium - better known as salt - maintains the correct balance of certain fluids which bathe the cells in our bodies - essential for nerve and muscle function. However, research shows that too much salt can lead to increased blood pressure, osteoporosis - a bone-thinning disease, asthma, stomach cancer and weight gain.

Effect of Too Much Salt in the Kidneys
Any unwanted fluids in the body is removed via the kidneys. The kidneys suck out the extra fluid as urine stored in the bladder. For the kidneys to do this however, osmosis takes place to draw out water from the blood. Osmosis uses a balance of sodium and potassium to acquire water across a wall of cells from the bloodstream into a collecting channel in which the bladder connects to. Eating salt or consuming too much salt wrecks the delicate balance as it increases the amount of sodium in the body which in turn, reduces the capability of the kidneys to remove the water. The result? a higher blood pressure due to the extra fluid and and extra strain on the blood vessels leading to the kidneys which leads to kidney disease. This reduces their ability to filter out unwanted and toxic waste products, which then start to build up in the body. If kidney disease is left untreated and the blood pressure isn't lowered, the damage can lead to kidney failure. This is when the kidneys are no longer able to be filter the blood and the body slowly becomes poisoned by its own toxic waste products. If you have high blood pressure and are being treated with a diuretic medication, this makes the kidneys remove more fluid from the bloodstream because the sodium in salt counteracts this effect, reducing your salt intake will make your blood pressure medicine more effective.
Like supplement labeling, custom vitamins and contract manufacturing nutraceuticals companies, food companies include the nutrition facts of their products, as mandated by the FDA, mostly next to the list of ingredients so always read the label.

Salt and Osteoporosis
High consumption in salt increases calcium losses in the urine (calciuria), some of which will be directly from the bones. One study show that for each 100mmol increase in salt intake, urinary Ca is increased by 1.4mmol. If this loss is assumed to be from the bone, then this equates to approximately 1% extra bone loss each year. Over extended periods, this would lead to the brittleness of the bones and ultimately osteoporosis.

Prevent Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases
With GarlicTo date, there are a lot of health benefits of eating garlic that is backed up by research: Garlic contains a compound called Allicin. Allicin prevents cardiovascular diseases, restores suppressed antibody responses, prevents the common cold, used in prevention and treatment of cancer and allicin also has antimicrobial properties. The allicin in garlic has the ability to lower total cholesterol, LDL, or “bad cholesterol” and triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol. (2,3) This in turn may aid in the prevention of heart-related conditions such as heart attack, atherosclerosis, and stroke. In addition, allicin contributes to the overall health of the circulatory system, which may help in lowering the risk of heart attack and strokes.
To add into that list, is the nutrition found in garlic! An ounce of garlic approximately has 23% Manganese, 17% Vitamin B6, 15% Vitamin C, 6% Selenium and a gram of fiber (percentages according to RDA). It also has Calcium, Copper, Potassium, Phosphorus, Iron and Vitamin B1. Garlic can reduce blood pressure thanks to its active compounds. We all know for a fact that heart attack and stroke is the number 1 killer disease in the world.
The most important drivers of these diseases is high blood pressure or hypertension. Studies have found garlic supplementation to have a significant impact on reducing blood pressure so if you are looking for a make sure that you get a reliable one.

Garlic Regulates Blood
SugarGarlic regulates blood sugar as it enhances insulin in the blood, this may help in controlling diabetes.
Be careful though, too much consumption of garlic could be dangerous! In large doses, garlic can be detrimental to your health and you should never take more than the recommended dosage. Also be aware that the properties of garlic actually get into your bloodstream which is why it is so effective in so many ways. What this does mean, however, is that when you sweat, garlic will leave your body through your pores. Many people who eat larger than normal amounts of garlic report increased body odor.
Treat Skin Infections With Garlic
Allicin, which is a sulfuric compound found in garlic, as we mentioned earlier, is a natural antibiotic which makes it a great skin-infection treatment! All you have to do is crush garlic and apply it on the infected area. Also. the chemical ajoene found in garlic may help treat fungal skin infections like ringworm and athlete’s foot.
Garlic is a Great Source of Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is known as a great cancer-fighting wonder! Cancers like bladder cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and stomach cancer have all been shown to have their tumors reduced when treated with garlic. Vitamin B6 can also help with mood swings therefore bringing back your cheerful disposition!
