<![CDATA[The Benefits of Goji Berry]]>Tue, 26 Apr 2016 16:05:47 GMThttp://30dayhealth.net/1/post/2016/04/the-benefits-of-goji-berry.htmlThousands of years ago in China during the Tang dynasty, there is this village where people are very healthy; they live more than the age of 80, the villagers’ hair and skin are beautiful and people from far and wide come to this village to find out what their secret was. There is this well where people drink from every day and when they do, the water gives them energy but it’s not really the water itself. Goji vines are growing all around the well, dropping berries into the water which makes the whole well a large version of a tea and this story is the start of the wide scale usage of Goji berry in China which happened 5,000 years ago. Wow!
Picture
Goji tea party!
Goji berries contain all the macronutrients our body needed to sustain a healthy diet. This includes healthy fats, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. In terms of protein, Goji berry contains all 8 amino acids. A berry, roughly the size of your fingernail, is 10% protein which is actually amazing for a fruit! Goji berries are one of the known high antioxidant-rich foods in the world. Not only that, they also contain at least 20 vitamins and minerals. It even has beta carotene levels that are higher than carrots, vitamin C levels that are higher than oranges and iron levels higher than soy beans or spinach! Pretty amazing for a little berry right? Also, some studies found out that Goji berries aid athletes in their performance, helps you achieve quality sleep and helps in weight loss.
Earlier, we mentioned about antioxidants. Antioxidants found in Goji berries, temper the destructive power of free radicals. These free radicals are substances that are naturally occuring in the body but if they are produced in excess, they damage healthy cells.

Let us break it to you gently, shall we?
Picture
Make it an everyday ritual!
 • Balances PH levels – this could be puzzling for some because we all know that lemon is acidic and that’s true. However once in our bodies, they are alkalizing. Meaning, it helps in maintaining the body’s acid-base balance which is very important.
 • Wakes Up Your Digestive System – lemon water kick starts your digestive system and prepares it for your daily food routine. It flushes out unwanted toxins from the body. It’s atomic composition is similar to saliva and the hydrochloric acid of the digestive juices in the stomach.
 • Makes Your Skin Beautiful - lemon water keeps your skin clear and glowing.
 • Boosts your Energy – lemon water is a natural energy booster
 • Detoxification – if you’re thinking of detoxifying, lemon water is the way to go! Lemon water has antibacterial, antiviral and immune system-boosting properties and helps in keeping the liver clean and weight loss!
Picture
Drink up!
How to make a glass of lemon water:

What you need:
 • ½ of a medium-sized organic lemon
 • A tall glass or a mason jar
 • Hand juicer
 • Water (can be cold or warm depending on your preference)

Squeeze the juice directly into your container and mix with water. You can also add some cayenne pepper into the mix. Cayenne pepper works very well with lemon and it further enhances detoxification.

Lemons contain many substances like citric acid, calcium, magnesium, Vitamins C, Bioflavanoids, Pectin and Limonene which promote immunity and fight infection. Also, lemons are high in potassium that stimulates brain function therefore it makes so much sense why one should take a glass of lemon water in the morning.

<![CDATA[Calcium’s Benefits and Food Sources]]>Mon, 11 Apr 2016 16:11:42 GMThttp://30dayhealth.net/1/post/2016/04/calciums-benefits-and-food-sources.htmlCalcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. We all know this since we were 5 years old but you know Calcium does more than that? Calcium also helps in muscle function, maintaining a healthy heart rhythm, used in treatment of indigestion (Calcium is an ingredient in antacids), if you have high amounts of magnesium, potassium and phosphorus in your body, Calcium is used to control them, Calcium can also prevent specific cancers (needs more study though) and many more!
Picture
That's a-moo-zing to know!
If you don’t get enough calcium in your body, you might suffer from bone-related diseases and health problems due to weak bones. Children might not be able to reach their full growth potential if they lack calcium and adults may be at risk for osteoporosis due to low bone mass. Sad to say, a lot of Americans don’t get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calcium. Children, adolescent girls and adults age 50 and older are the most common victims.

The amount of calcium that you need depends on your age and sex.

Men (RDA)
19-50 years old: 1,000mg and a daily limit of 2,500mg
51-70 years old: 1,000mg and a daily limit of 2,000mg
71 years old an older: 1,200mg and a daily limit of 2,000mg

Women (RDA)
19 – 50 years old: 1,200mg and a daily limit of 2,500mg
51 years old and older: 1,200mg and a daily limit of 2,000mg

Going above the daily limit might give you health problems related to excessive calcium like Hypercalcemia. Women need more calcium than men because for some reason, they are more prone to osteoporosis or the thinning of bones than men.

Sadly, our bodies can’t produce calcium so you must acquire it through the following food:
Dairy like milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream, buttermilk, margarine, etc.

Green and leafy vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, okra, collards, turnip greens, leeks, artichokes, kale, swiss chard, fennel, celery, spinach, dandelion greens, asparagus, cabbage, brussels sprouts, etc.

Fish with edible bones like sardines and canned salmon, and other calcium fortified foods but take note of the other stuff that goes with it. Your orange juice might be calcium-fortified but it’s not worth it if the sugar level is way too high.

Incorporate calcium in your meals! Try this cauliflower rice recipe or try this fruit and herb infused water recipe using mineral water.

<![CDATA[The Healing Benefits of Rose Oil]]>Fri, 08 Apr 2016 16:28:57 GMThttp://30dayhealth.net/1/post/2016/04/the-healing-benefits-of-rose-oil.htmlRose oil is the essential oil extracted from different kinds of roses. A single rose bloom will only yield a very tiny amount of rose oil hence the high price not to mention the labor-intensive production process. The two major species of rose that is cultivated for rose oil are Rosa Damascena and Rosa Centifolia.
Here are the 3 “A” benefits of rose oil:

Antidepressant
Along with lavender oil, rose oil is frequently used for its antidepressant and mood-boosting properties. Ask any aromatherapist and they will agree that rose oil is the best stuff! Rose oil is proven to soothe the nerves and relieves depression. A study was done by the Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice nvolving 28 postpartum women. They were divided into 2 groups; one is treated with 15-minutes session of a 2.5% solution of roil and lavender oil aromatherapy 2 times a week for 4 weeks. The results showed a significant decrease in postnatal depression scores! The mere aroma of rose oil is enough to alleviate depressive symptoms.

Antibacterial
Rose oil is added to lotions and creams because of its antimicrobial benefits. In a 2010 Chinese research, rose oil proved to completely destroyed acne bacteria after exposure to rose oil for 5 minutes. Rose oil is not only antibacterial, it is also a good astringent, antiseptic and antiviral properties. The compound called farnesol is the one responsible for killing bacteria and may also help in the regeneration of new skin! To sum it all up, rose oil is a good skincare treatment ingredient. Try adding some in your DIY lotion of face cream!
Picture
Flower Power! Yeah! Kill those bacteria!
Aphrodisiac
Take it from Cleopatra herself; she entices her lovers by bathing in aromatic rose petals. Since rose oil acts as an anti-anxiety agent, rose oil may help men with sexual dysfunction caused by anxiety and stress. You might have seen a bath tub or bed filled with rose petals in movies, yeah, that’s it. Now you know.

Ancient Egyptians highly regard onions; they even use it as a currency to pay workers. Onions are part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs that includes garlic, chives, leeks and scallions. These allium vegetables have been cultivated not only for cooking thanks to its pungent flavor but also for the medicinal properties they contain. There are a lot of onion varieties. Onions vary in size, color and shape. Not all onions taste the same. Some are sweet, while others are spicy, pungent and some have a bold flavor. Here are some benefits of onions:
Oral Health – It may sound something you will resort to last but chewing raw onions for 2-3minutes could kill germs found in the mouth area therefore prevents oral infections and tooth decay.

Heart Health – Eating onions prevents red blood cells from clumping by thinning the blood. These clumps are dangerous because they could lead to serious heart disorders or cardiovascular diseases.

Skin Health – Mix onion juice and honey or olive oil and apply topically on acne-infected areas of the skin. Don’t eat it off your face.

Relieves Stomach Ache – Onions have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that give relief to upset stomach and related gastro syndromes.

Supports Bones and Connective Tissues – Studies show that consumption of onions increases bone density and may benefit women of menopausal age who are experiencing bone density loss.

Cancer Prevention – Onions lower the risk of several cancers even when consumed in just moderate amounts (1-2 times per week, half of an onion). Some of these cancers are colorectal cancer, laryngeal cancer and ovarian cancers.
Picture
Yes! Put some more onions!
Incorporate onions in your diet by adding them in salads, stir-fry, roasted dishes, add them in gratins, guacamole, sandwiches, sauces, soups, stews, braised meat dishes, use them as garnish or you can enjoy them raw as a side dish! Yes, it cleanses the palette too! The healthiest way to prepare them is by cooking them in a hot pan with 2 tablespoons of vegetable broth.

<![CDATA[Fiber is an Important Part of a Healthy Diet]]>Wed, 30 Mar 2016 18:57:27 GMThttp://30dayhealth.net/1/post/2016/03/the-benefits-of-fiber.htmlFirst, let’s talk about what fiber is. Fiber comes from different kinds of plant food. This includes: fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body cannot digest, it simply passes through the body and goes out you know where. Fiber does not have any caloric and food energy unlike the other different kinds of carbohydrates but that doesn’t mean you’ll pass up on fiber! Fiber-rich foods takes up much more space than foods without them, therefore you will feel fuller, longer. Hello weight watchers!
Picture
Fiber in different forms!
Types of Fiber
FYI: Fiber is only found in foods that came from plants. Other foods like meat and dairy do not contain any fiber. There are two types of fiber and each are will benefit you in a different way.

Soluble Fiber – soluble fiber dissolves in water. When eaten, soluble fiber dissolves in the body and slows down the absorption of fat and sugar, and the breakdown of carbohydrates. Note that it doesn’t prevent the absorption; it only slows down the process. This is very helpful for those seeking to have a stable blood sugar levels.
Food Sources of Soluble Fiber: oats, barley, rye, fruits, root vegetables and golden linseeds
Picture
Fiber for breakfast is never a bad idea.
Insoluble Fiber – insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. When eaten, insoluble fiber promotes the movement of material in your digestive track. Insoluble fiber is good for those people who have digestive problems. Not recommended if you have diarrhoea.
Food Sources of Insoluble Fiber: wholemeal bread, bran cereals, nuts and seeds, excluding golden linseeds.

Fiber is an essential part of a healthy diet. It also helps in the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and cancer like colorectal cancer. A fiber-rich diet normalizes bowel movements and helps maintain bowel health, lowers cholesterol levels, helps control blood sugar levels and helps you achieve a healthy weight. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for fiber is 24 grams per day for women and 38 grams per day for men.

<![CDATA[Eating Carotenoid-Rich Foods Can Prevent ALS]]>Tue, 29 Mar 2016 13:36:25 GMThttp://30dayhealth.net/1/post/2016/03/eating-carotenoid-rich-foods-can-prevent-als.htmlALS awareness efforts made waves in 2014. The Ice Bucket Challenge, the act of dumping cold water with ice on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease and encourage donations to research ALS, quickly turned from a fundraising campaign to a viral internet sensation and has raised more than $16 million!
Picture
Our research team was unable to find out how much water was wasted but we figured it's a lot. A LOT.
ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the cells of the nerves found in the brain and spinal cord. This disease is generally developed between the ages 40 and 70, and affects men more than women. According to Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, it is very important to understand the impact of food consumption on ALS during its developmental stage. Dr. Ascherio’s study examines the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS.

To make the long story short, the team found that increased consumption of carotenoids was linked to reduced risk of ALS. Furthermore, the study also pointed out that individuals who consumed more carotenoids were more likely to exercise and have higher vitamin C consumption. Dr. Ascherio’s conclusion? Carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS.
Picture
ALS-free since 1940
When we say “carotenoid”, it means any class of mainly red, orange or yellow fat-soluble pigments, which includes carotene, that gives color to plant parts. Here are some examples of caratenoid-rich foods: carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, squash, cantaloupe, peppers, apricots, peas, broccoli, guava, kiwi, berries. Carotenoids are the one responsible in giving fruits and vegetables their bright color (mentioned above). They are a good source of Vitamin A too! Previous studies before Dr. Ascherio’s report that oxidative stress plays a role in the developmental stages of ALS.
Picture
Carotenoid buffet!
So eat up but don't overdo it. Remember it's easy to overdose with carrots. Eat healthy and to get the most benefits, toss in some supplements!

<![CDATA[Reasons Why You Should Take Vitamins and Supplements]]>Sat, 26 Mar 2016 08:36:52 GMThttp://30dayhealth.net/1/post/2016/03/reasons-why-you-should-take-vitamins-and-supplements.htmlThe adult majority in the United States take dietary supplements either every day or occasionally yet most people are still doubtful about the importance of taking supplements. Here are some reasons that could probably sway you to a different direction:
Picture
Yes, that's right. Read thy label.
Soil Quality
If we could go back in time, say 100 years ago or even back to the Stone Age, and get a soil sample and compare it with the present day’s soil, we would see that today’s soil is lacking important minerals than it is in the past and because of this, food grown is also deficient in minerals.

Modern Food Processing
Food has gone through a long process to make it more available to people all around the world. Shipping and storing foods for a long time causes the nutrients they contain to deplete. Plus, cooking methods like boiling, preservation, etc. further reduce whatever that’s left in the food. Now, if you rely solely on food for all your nutrition needs, this could be a huge problem.
Picture
You wouldn't eat paper, would you?
Genetically Bred “Healthy Foods”
If you have an apple sitting in your fruit basket, most likely it is genetically bred. A lot of fruits and vegetables are genetically bred so it will look perfect in the eyes of consumers. Who wouldn’t buy a spotless banana, a shiny red apple or a ridiculously leafy lettuce? These genetically bred fruits and vegetables might be lacking a lot of nutrients they should be having. You thought you’re eating healthy but you’re actually being scammed. We’re not generalizing though.

Individual Genetic Weakness and Needs
We all have our own genetic weaknesses: some people need higher amounts of a specific nutrient while others don’t. There are also times when we need more doses of certain nutrients during specific times in our lives like during pregnancy, illness, etc.

Replenishment
Modern technology had made our lives easier, that’s a fact but there’s another reality we have to face alongside all this modernity: increased levels of pollution in the air and water which also affects the quality of food. To cope up, the body uses more nutrients (antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E) to eliminate harmful substances more often that it normally would so you need to replenish.

It is very important to consult with a health professional before taking vitamins and supplements. Supplements with sweeteners (natural and artificial ones), preservatives and unnatural colors should be avoided.

The good fats
Sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Fish lovers are in for a treat! You can get a good amount of Omega-3 with: anchovies, bluefish, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines, sturgeon, lake trout and tuna. The downside of having a strict fish diet is the absorption of too much mercury, which is poisonous to the body in high doses. The borderline is 7 ounces. Don’t eat more than that in a day. Other sources include: walnuts, flaxseed, canola oil, soybean oil.

Supplementation of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
For people who can’t eat fish (ex: allergies, have no access to fish, etc.), supplementation is highly recommended. The American Heart Association recommends 3 grams of fish oil per day. Don’t take more than that unless you discuss it with your doctor.
