How to make a glass of lemon water:

What you need:
  • ½ of a medium-sized organic lemon
  •  A tall glass or a mason jar
  • Hand juicer
  • Water (can be cold or warm depending on your preference)

Squeeze the juice directly into your container and mix with water. You can also add some cayenne pepper into the mix. Cayenne pepper works very well with lemon and it further enhances detoxification.

ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the cells of the nerves found in the brain and spinal cord. This disease is generally developed between the ages 40 and 70, and affects men more than women. According to Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, it is very important to understand the impact of food consumption on ALS during its developmental stage. Dr. Ascherio’s study examines the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS.

To make the long story short, the team found that increased consumption of carotenoids was linked to reduced risk of ALS. Furthermore, the study also pointed out that individuals who consumed more carotenoids were more likely to exercise and have higher vitamin C consumption. Dr. Ascherio’s conclusion? Carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS.

When we say “carotenoid”, it means any class of mainly red, orange or yellow fat-soluble pigments, which includes carotene, that gives color to plant parts. Here are some examples of caratenoid-rich foods: carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, squash, cantaloupe, peppers, apricots, peas, broccoli, guava, kiwi, berries. Carotenoids are the one responsible in giving fruits and vegetables their bright color (mentioned above). They are a good source of Vitamin A too! Previous studies before Dr. Ascherio’s report that oxidative stress plays a role in the developmental stages of ALS.
