So, why is it important to break your fast with lemon water before you eat breakfast? Let us break it to you gently, shall we?
Picture
Make it an everyday ritual!
  • Balances PH levels – this could be puzzling for some because we all know that lemon is acidic and that’s true. However once in our bodies, they are alkalizing. Meaning, it helps in maintaining the body’s acid-base balance which is very important.
  • Wakes Up Your Digestive System – lemon water kick starts your digestive system and prepares it for your daily food routine. It flushes out unwanted toxins from the body. It’s atomic composition is similar to saliva and the hydrochloric acid of the digestive juices in the stomach.
  • Makes Your Skin Beautiful -  lemon water keeps your skin clear and glowing.
  • Boosts your Energy – lemon water is a natural energy booster
  • Detoxification – if you’re thinking of detoxifying, lemon water is the way to go! Lemon water has antibacterial, antiviral and immune system-boosting properties and helps in keeping the liver clean and weight loss!
Picture
Drink up!
How to make a glass of lemon water:

What you need:
  • ½ of a medium-sized organic lemon
  •  A tall glass or a mason jar
  • Hand juicer
  • Water (can be cold or warm depending on your preference)

Squeeze the juice directly into your container and mix with water. You can also add some cayenne pepper into the mix. Cayenne pepper works very well with lemon and it further enhances detoxification.

Lemons contain many substances like citric acid, calcium, magnesium, Vitamins C, Bioflavanoids, Pectin and Limonene which promote immunity and fight infection. Also, lemons are high in potassium that stimulates brain function therefore it makes so much sense why one should take a glass of lemon water in the morning.

Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. We all know this since we were 5 years old but you know Calcium does more than that? Calcium also helps in muscle function, maintaining a healthy heart rhythm, used in treatment of indigestion (Calcium is an ingredient in antacids), if you have high amounts of magnesium, potassium and phosphorus in your body, Calcium is used to control them, Calcium can also prevent specific cancers (needs more study though) and many more!
Picture
That's a-moo-zing to know!
If you don’t get enough calcium in your body, you might suffer from bone-related diseases and health problems due to weak bones. Children might not be able to reach their full growth potential if they lack calcium and adults may be at risk for osteoporosis due to low bone mass. Sad to say, a lot of Americans don’t get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calcium. Children, adolescent girls and adults age 50 and older are the most common victims.

The amount of calcium that you need depends on your age and sex.

Men (RDA)
19-50 years old: 1,000mg and a daily limit of 2,500mg
51-70 years old: 1,000mg and a daily limit of 2,000mg
71 years old an older: 1,200mg and a daily limit of 2,000mg

Women (RDA)
19 – 50 years old: 1,200mg and a daily limit of 2,500mg
51 years old and older: 1,200mg and a daily limit of 2,000mg

Going above the daily limit might give you health problems related to excessive calcium like Hypercalcemia. Women need more calcium than men because for some reason, they are more prone to osteoporosis or the thinning of bones than men.

Sadly, our bodies can’t produce calcium so you must acquire it through the following food:
Dairy like milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream, buttermilk, margarine, etc.

Green and leafy vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, okra, collards, turnip greens, leeks, artichokes, kale, swiss chard, fennel, celery, spinach, dandelion greens, asparagus, cabbage, brussels sprouts, etc.

Fish with edible bones like sardines and canned salmon, and other calcium fortified foods but take note of the other stuff that goes with it. Your orange juice might be calcium-fortified but it’s not worth it if the sugar level is way too high.

Incorporate calcium in your meals! Try this cauliflower rice recipe or try this fruit and herb infused water recipe using mineral water.

Native to Asia and the Middle East, onions have been cultivated for over 5,000 years! Ancient Egyptians highly regard onions; they even use it as a currency to pay workers. Onions are part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs that includes garlic, chives, leeks and scallions. These allium vegetables have been cultivated not only for cooking thanks to its pungent flavor but also for the medicinal properties they contain. There are a lot of onion varieties. Onions vary in size, color and shape. Not all onions taste the same. Some are sweet, while others are spicy, pungent and some have a bold flavor. Here are some benefits of onions:
Oral Health – It may sound something you will resort to last but chewing raw onions for 2-3minutes could kill germs found in the mouth area therefore prevents oral infections and tooth decay.

Heart Health – Eating onions prevents red blood cells from clumping by thinning the blood. These clumps are dangerous because they could lead to serious heart disorders or cardiovascular diseases.

Skin Health – Mix onion juice and honey or olive oil and apply topically on acne-infected areas of the skin. Don’t eat it off your face.

Relieves Stomach Ache – Onions have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that give relief to upset stomach and related gastro syndromes.

Supports Bones and Connective Tissues – Studies show that consumption of onions increases bone density and may benefit women of menopausal age who are experiencing bone density loss.

Cancer Prevention – Onions lower the risk of several cancers even when consumed in just moderate amounts (1-2 times per week, half of an onion). Some of these cancers are colorectal cancer, laryngeal cancer and ovarian cancers.
Picture
Yes! Put some more onions!
Incorporate onions in your diet by adding them in salads, stir-fry, roasted dishes, add them in gratins, guacamole, sandwiches, sauces, soups, stews, braised meat dishes, use them as garnish or you can enjoy them raw as a side dish! Yes, it cleanses the palette too! The healthiest way to prepare them is by cooking them in a hot pan with 2 tablespoons of vegetable broth.

First, let’s talk about what fiber is. Fiber comes from different kinds of plant food. This includes: fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body cannot digest, it simply passes through the body and goes out you know where. Fiber does not have any caloric and food energy unlike the other different kinds of carbohydrates but that doesn’t mean you’ll pass up on fiber! Fiber-rich foods takes up much more space than foods without them, therefore you will feel fuller, longer. Hello weight watchers!
Picture
Fiber in different forms!
Types of Fiber
FYI: Fiber is only found in foods that came from plants. Other foods like meat and dairy do not contain any fiber. There are two types of fiber and each are will benefit you in a different way.

Soluble Fiber – soluble fiber dissolves in water. When eaten, soluble fiber dissolves in the body and slows down the absorption of fat and sugar, and the breakdown of carbohydrates. Note that it doesn’t prevent the absorption; it only slows down the process. This is very helpful for those seeking to have a stable blood sugar levels.
Food Sources of Soluble Fiber: oats, barley, rye, fruits, root vegetables and golden linseeds
Picture
Fiber for breakfast is never a bad idea.
Insoluble Fiber – insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. When eaten, insoluble fiber promotes the movement of material in your digestive track. Insoluble fiber is good for those people who have digestive problems. Not recommended if you have diarrhoea.
Food Sources of Insoluble Fiber: wholemeal bread, bran cereals, nuts and seeds, excluding golden linseeds.

Fiber is an essential part of a healthy diet. It also helps in the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and cancer like colorectal cancer. A fiber-rich diet normalizes bowel movements and helps maintain bowel health, lowers cholesterol levels, helps control blood sugar levels and helps you achieve a healthy weight. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for fiber is 24 grams per day for women and 38 grams per day for men.

ALS awareness efforts made waves in 2014. The Ice Bucket Challenge, the act of dumping cold water with ice on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease and encourage donations to research ALS, quickly turned from a fundraising campaign to a viral internet sensation and has raised more than $16 million!
Picture
Our research team was unable to find out how much water was wasted but we figured it's a lot. A LOT.
ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the cells of the nerves found in the brain and spinal cord. This disease is generally developed between the ages 40 and 70, and affects men more than women. According to Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, it is very important to understand the impact of food consumption on ALS during its developmental stage. Dr. Ascherio’s study examines the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS.

To make the long story short, the team found that increased consumption of carotenoids was linked to reduced risk of ALS. Furthermore, the study also pointed out that individuals who consumed more carotenoids were more likely to exercise and have higher vitamin C consumption. Dr. Ascherio’s conclusion? Carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS.
Picture
ALS-free since 1940
When we say “carotenoid”, it means any class of mainly red, orange or yellow fat-soluble pigments, which includes carotene, that gives color to plant parts. Here are some examples of caratenoid-rich foods: carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, squash, cantaloupe, peppers, apricots, peas, broccoli, guava, kiwi, berries. Carotenoids are the one responsible in giving fruits and vegetables their bright color (mentioned above). They are a good source of Vitamin A too! Previous studies before Dr. Ascherio’s report that oxidative stress plays a role in the developmental stages of ALS.
Picture
Carotenoid buffet!
So eat up but don't overdo it. Remember it's easy to overdose with carrots. Eat healthy and to get the most benefits, toss in some supplements!

If you’re going to strip your skin off and put it on a scale, it will roughly weigh 6 pounds because it is the largest organ in the body. Skin is one of the first few things that are noticed to our selves by others and the health of your skin is a reflection of how much you take care of it. What you do to your skin today will eventually show in the future plus there are other factors that could pose as threats for you to achieve healthy and beautiful skin!
Picture
Looks like a scene from that zombie series on tv.
There’s genetics, environment, the lifestyle we live and the food that we eat are just some of the few. These factors could lead to premature aging of the skin. We can always choose to fight it and we should choose to be healthy and beautiful. Here are foods that could just help you in achieving that goal:
Picture
Dragon fruit
Citrus and Tropical Fruits – Clementine, grapefruit, mandarin orange, lemon, lime, blood orange, pineapple, papaya, kiwi, guava... we are after one famous vitamin. You guessed it right! It’s Vitamin C! Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant that is found naturally in our skin. Eating these fruits replenishes your skin’s stock. Vitamin C also helps the body in the production of collagen. Now most of us know the importance of collagen now, do we? It helps maintain the skin’s firmness and elasticity. Both of which are characteristics of healthy and young skin!
Picture
Because adding oranges to a salad makes it "Asian"
How to add them in your diet: toss them in a blender along with ice and make a delicious smoothie! Toss some on leafy salads for that “Asian” twist.
Picture
A bowl of green goodness!
Broccoli – Broccoli’s abundance of vitamins C and E should never be underestimated. These two powerful antioxidants work hand in hand to give you that supple skin and additional protection from the sun’s harmful UV radiation.
How to add them in your diet: Stir-fry with almost anything! You can also steam them and serve as a healthy side dish or Blend it in your green smoothie!

Almonds – probably the best source of vitamin E. Vitamin E nourishes the skin but be sure not to eat too much. Almonds, like other nuts, are calorie-dense. That means a little amount packs a lot of calories.
How to add them in your diet: Remember that “Asian” salad we mentioned, earlier? Yeah. Add almonds in there too. Almonds can be crushed and can be a topping to a lot of dishes!

Whole Grains – whole grain pasta and bread takes the cake! Another skin-friendly nutrient is selenium which also protects the skin from damage and gives it elasticity!
How to add them in your diet: We won’t talk about this one because we all know how to eat pasta and bread but just in case you don’t, remember that stir-fried broccoli we made earlier? Yeah. Toss is with whole wheat pasta and add slices of tomatoes with basil and olive oil.

Carrots – Yes! Beta carotene is part of the team! Vitamin A helps repair skin tissues and keeps your skin vibrant! It’s very easy to overdose with carrots though so go easy on them.
How to add them in your diet: The best way is to eat them raw. Enjoy the crunchy goodness of this lovely vegetable with a yoghurt dip. And oh, remember that “Asian” salad? Yeah. Shred some on those. I wonder what else we can add on this “Asian” salad. Well anyway, moving on...

Pumpkin Seeds – pumpkin seeds are considered a super food due to its high Zinc content. Zinc promotes renewal of the skin, protection of the skin membranes and aids in maintaining collagen.
How to add them in your diet: Roast them on a pan, and like almonds, sprinkle over almost anything or eat them as they are while watching tv!
Picture
Grilled salmon with spiced almonds! Combo meal!
Salmon – actually most fishes but salmon is the most popular one when we hear about omega-3 fats which fortifies the skin, protects against sun damage and reduce the risk of having certain skin cancers. Don't deep fry them. Just grill or bake.

Now, that’s a lot of food now isn’t it? Supplementation of the said Vitamins can also be done if you can't eat all of these foods or if you have specific allergies. You can eat your way to healthy and beautiful skin or just take your supplements. Some doctors even recommend doing both to achieve optimal results!

50-year old George Prior from Los Angeles, California documented his experiment that involves drinking not one, not two, but ten cans of Coca-Cola per day for an entire month!

35 grams of sugar per can so that’s 350g ingested every day. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are:
  • Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons).
  • Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).
As expected, the results were not good. George’s former healthy and muscular physique changed drastically. His Coke-devouring habit resulted in a pot belly, he lost muscular mass and his weight rocketed from 168 lb to 192. Not only that, his blood pressure also shot up from 129/77 to 145/96, that’s way above the ideal 120/80. This lead to an increased risk of heart disease or stroke. According to George, this experiment also made him crave for more and it came to a point where he was scared he might be addicted to Coca-Cola.

Picture
During the experiment, he still ate the usual healthy stuff he eats. He simply added Coke in the picture. Too much of it.
The aim of George’s experiment was "to raise awareness about how much sugar you drink every day, and to remind you how unhealthy it is." As he said on his website: "Maybe it's not all coke, but they're all sugar drinks, and a big percentage of Americans drink at least the sugar equivalent of my ten Cokes."

As a vitamin manufacturer and a supplement manufacturer company, we encourage everyone to be mindful of their sugar intake. This is the part where we will say: “Less is more”. Less sugar, more (longer) life. But don't just take our word for it, Listen to what George said as he concluded the experiment:
Watch his experiment:

What is Choline?
Choline is a strongly basic compound occurring in living tissues and plays a very important  role in the synthesis and transport of lipids. Choline is a water-soluble nutrient and it is usually grouped within the B-complex vitamins (A group of water-soluble vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, pyridoxine, folic acid, inositol, and vitamin B12 and occurring chiefly in yeast, liver, eggs, and some vegetables).
Some of the Benefits of CholineLiver: Choline is likely disease caused by exclusive feeding by vein (parenteral nutrition). Giving choline intravenously (by IV) treats liver disease in people receiving parenteral nutrition who are choline deficient.

Membrane Structure: Choline is an essential nutrient in the production of phosphatidylcholine, one of the most important structural building blocks of a living cell. Its unique soap-like structure helps to keep the membrane fluid, yet mostly impermeable.

The "May" Benefits: These are some of the health benefits of Choline that needs further studies but there are some accounts wherein they claim Choline helped. That includes the following:
  • May help memory problems associated with aging
  • Prenatal use may lead to lifelong improvement of visuospatial memory in children born of the pregnancy
  • Supplementation during infancy and childhood may lead to improved lifelong memory
  • May reduce fatigue and increase vigor during strenuous exercise
  • May help reduce levels of plasma homocysteine

What is Selenium?
Selenium is an essential trace mineral important for cognitive function, a healthy immune system and fertility for both men and women. Selenium is found in a variety of foods, the richest sources being Brazil nuts, seafood and organ meats.
Picture
Brazil Nuts
Health Benefits of Selenium
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Helps in sperm production in males
  • Helps in maintaining healthy hair and nails
  • Aids in normal function of the thyroid
  • Protects cells from being damaged

Selenium is responsible for the body's production of prostaglandins which is a group of cyclic fatty acid compounds with varying hormone-like effects, notably the promotion of uterine contractions; which regulates inflammation and can reduce inflammations related to Rheumatoid arthritis.
Picture
In a 2014 study in Netherlands, Selenium has been linked to helping in lowering the risk of prostate cancer. Researchers tested the levels of selenium in the toenails of study participants, a marker that measures long-term selenium intake. The researchers found that the greater the level of selenium in the toenail, the lower the risk for prostate cancer in study participants. Of note, earlier studies investigating a link between selenium and prostate cancer had varying results. Selenium, together with vitamin E, as an antioxidant prevents the formation of free radicals which means reduced risk of skin cancer and can help in preventing sunburn.

Picture
Sources of Selenium
Selenium is a mineral that can be found in several food categories but before we go crazy over this tiny chunk of miracle, please note that we only need a small amount of Selenium. The recommended daily allowance for Selenium (RDA) is 55 micrograms per day for adults and for pregnant and lactating women, it's 60 to 70 micrograms a day.

Nuts/Seeds
As mentioned above, Brazil Nuts tops the list. Brazil nuts are large three-sided nuts with an edible kernel, several of which grow inside a large woody capsule. Brazil nuts grow on a South American forest tree, and most are harvested in the wild. 4-6 pieces of these nuts will give you 544 micrograms of Selenium but it depends on the soil the nuts are grown and the process of farming. Poor soil and bad farming process has been proved to reduce the amount of Selenium in Brazil Nuts. Sunflower seeds provide 55 micrograms per 100g.

Seafood
Fish, particularly Yellow Fin Tuna provides 108.2 micrograms of Selenium per 100g. Shellfish like crabs, prawns and lobsters contain Selenium too! The highest among the shellfish category is oyster. 100g of oysters pack 80 micrograms!

Organ Meats
Organ Meats like kidney and liver are high in Selenium. You can get 100 micrograms of Selenium from 100g of liver from lamb or chicken.

Other Sources
Other sources include: eggs (27µg/100g), mushrooms (19µg/cup), cereals/bread (7µg/100g) and other vegetables like broccoli have Selenium but in less amount.
