50-year old George Prior from Los Angeles, California documented his experiment that involves drinking not one, not two, but ten cans of Coca-Cola per day for an entire month!

35 grams of sugar per can so that’s 350g ingested every day. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are: 
  • Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons). 
  • Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons). 
As expected, the results were not good. George’s former healthy and muscular physique changed drastically. His Coke-devouring habit resulted in a pot belly, he lost muscular mass and his weight rocketed from 168 lb to 192. Not only that, his blood pressure also shot up from 129/77 to 145/96, that’s way above the ideal 120/80. This lead to an increased risk of heart disease or stroke. According to George, this experiment also made him crave for more and it came to a point where he was scared he might be addicted to Coca-Cola.

The aim of George’s experiment was "to raise awareness about how much sugar you drink every day, and to remind you how unhealthy it is." As he said on his website: "Maybe it's not all coke, but they're all sugar drinks, and a big percentage of Americans drink at least the sugar equivalent of my ten Cokes."

“Eat your orange so you won’t catch a cold.” You probably heard that from your mommy several times when you were just a kid... or until today. How Did it Start?
The cold-busting myth originated back in the 18th century: the time when there were no mobile phones, no internet and no vitamin manufacturers yet. The time in history when sailors had poor nutrition, lack of vitamin C to be exact. Scurvy was really a scare back then. Scurvy is a disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin C in the body. It is characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, and the opening of previously healed wounds.  

In addition, Linus Pauling popularized a theory back in 1970. This theory is all about using large doses of Vitamin C to prevent the common cold. He even published a book about it! He used up to 18,000 mg to himself every single day. That’s too much, considering the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 75mg for women and 90mg for men. At that time, there were really no good studies about it so we forgive them.

So There’s No Chance of Preventing Cold with Vitamin C?
Again, sorry to disappoint you but Vitamin C has shown no effect in cold prevention in normal situations according to clinical studies but that doesn’t mean you won’t be eating any oranges or taking vitamin C supplements anymore. Researches show that getting a dose of 200mg or above may help reduce the duration of colds slightly. Some other factors should also be considered like individuality: some people get better or improve afer taking Vitamin C supplements (provided by a reliable vitamin manufacturer and supplement manufacturer, thats us!) while others don’t.

Selenium is a mineral that can be found in several food categories but before we go crazy over this tiny chunk of miracle, please note that we only need a small amount of Selenium. The recommended daily allowance for Selenium (RDA) is 55 micrograms per day for adults and for pregnant and lactating women, it's 60 to 70 micrograms a day. 


Nuts/Seeds
As mentioned above, Brazil Nuts tops the list. Brazil nuts are large three-sided nuts with an edible kernel, several of which grow inside a large woody capsule. Brazil nuts grow on a South American forest tree, and most are harvested in the wild. 4-6 pieces of these nuts will give you 544 micrograms of Selenium but it depends on the soil the nuts are grown and the process of farming. Poor soil and bad farming process has been proved to reduce the amount of Selenium in Brazil Nuts. Sunflower seeds provide 55 micrograms per 100g. 


Seafood
Fish, particularly Yellow Fin Tuna provides 108.2 micrograms of Selenium per 100g. Shellfish like crabs, prawns and lobsters contain Selenium too! The highest among the shellfish category is oyster. 100g of oysters pack 80 micrograms! 

Organ Meats
Organ Meats like kidney and liver are high in Selenium. You can get 100 micrograms of Selenium from 100g of liver from lamb or chicken.


Other Sources

The Role of Salt in the Body
Sodium - better known as salt - maintains the correct balance of certain fluids which bathe the cells in our bodies - essential for nerve and muscle function. However, research shows that too much salt can lead to increased blood pressure, osteoporosis - a bone-thinning disease, asthma, stomach cancer and weight gain.

Effect of Too Much Salt in the Kidneys
Any unwanted fluids in the body is removed via the kidneys. The kidneys suck out the extra fluid as urine stored in the bladder. For the kidneys to do this however, osmosis takes place to draw out water from the blood. Osmosis uses a balance of sodium and potassium to acquire water across a wall of cells from the bloodstream into a collecting channel in which the bladder connects to. Eating salt or consuming too much salt wrecks the delicate balance as it increases the amount of sodium in the body which in turn, reduces the capability of the kidneys to remove the water. The result? a higher blood pressure due to the extra fluid and and extra strain on the blood vessels leading to the kidneys which leads to kidney disease. This reduces their ability to filter out unwanted and toxic waste products, which then start to build up in the body. If kidney disease is left untreated and the blood pressure isn't lowered, the damage can lead to kidney failure. This is when the kidneys are no longer able to be filter the blood and the body slowly becomes poisoned by its own toxic waste products. If you have high blood pressure and are being treated with a diuretic medication, this makes the kidneys remove more fluid from the bloodstream because the sodium in salt counteracts this effect, reducing your salt intake will make your blood pressure medicine more effective.
